Dear Editor,
The Commissioner of Police (AG) recently removed police officers from the Mabaruma Police Station on the basis of corruption and unprofessionalism. But unfortunately the police officers that took over including the police inspector are seemingly now on campaign of harassment and victimisation of Mabaruma residents who they feel are giving out information on the performance of police officer which was responsible for the removal of those officers that they replaced.
The Commissioner of police should have them quickly replaced as well for also lacking in professionalism.
According to residents, the police officers are engaged in the searching of homes with guns and without search warrants and no explanations to home owners on the reasons why such searches are being conducted. They will tell the home owners that “you could complained to who you want to, even the President of Guyana”. On the 12th October, 2017, a taxi driver was ordered by the new inspector of police to report to the Mabaruma Police Station where he was unjustifiably charged for the obstruction of traffic and have to attend court next month.
The taxi driver had simply parked his vehicle where other taxies are known to be parked at the Kumaka Water front area.
On the 11th October, 2017, a male and female were summoned to the Mabaruma Police Station for allegedly assaulting each other. The male was placed in the police lockups while the female apparently known to the police was allowed to go free.
When this was questioned by the father and another son; they both were physically “chucked” out from the station by the sergeant and the police inspector.
There is now a low level of police performance taking place in the Mabaruma sub-region. The Mabaruma Police Station in my opinion needs a superintendent of police to be the office in charge and not a police inspector like the Lethem Police Station in the Rupununi Region. Further, it is important the Commissioner of Police orders the reactivation of the Mabaruma Community Policing Group and that its members receive training in station duties and other police operations so that they can play an important role in law and order in the Mabaruma sub-region which currently is at its lowest.
The Mabaruma police station badly needs a station management committee to bring an end to lawlessness and unprofessional law-enforcement. Can the US $4.7 billion security sector reform (SSR) programme address the low-level of law-enforcement the Mabaruma sub-region is currently experiencing? Is this (SSR) programme alive? It seems not.
Peter Persaud.
