The recent demolition exercise held in the Sophia community last Thursday resulted in the affected residents protesting at United Nations Place Office on Monday last. It was here that the Chief Executive Officer of Central Housing and Planning Authority, Leyland Saul, took the opportunity to address the concerned residents on the matter.
Saul addressed the squatters through their representative, Clayton Jarvis who himself was a squatter. They were able to shake hands and agree on the matter by the end of the meeting.
The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) issued a statement which highlighted that Jarvis agreed to collaborate with CH&PA and the Anti-Squatting Task Force within constituencies 5 and 6 to remove squatters that are owners of house lots. He also agreed to ensure no such activity takes place on the reserves.
The protest held on Monday was one which displayed much aggression and frustration due to the 21 structures that were recently demolished. Some families were left homeless and at least one business place was destroyed.
CH&PA has since offered ‘low-cost’ homes to those squatters who were living on the government reserve which is expected to soon undergo infrastructural works. Additionally, those who were there for a short period of time were left ‘hopeless’.
The demolition exercise which started last week in ‘A’ Field Sophia was expected to also take place in ‘B’ Field, but the demolition crew was forced to not conduct the activity due to the violent behaviour displayed in the residents.
Kaieteur News understands that notices were served one week in advance of the activity. Although, they were given notice, several government officials vocalised great dissatisfaction over the way the situation was handled.
