The trial of Michael Britton who is accused of killing his workmate at Port Kaituma, North West District, commenced yesterday before Justice James Bovell Drakes at the High Court in Georgetown. A mixed 12-member jury has been empanelled.
Britton, also called ‘Rasta Man’, 36, of Vigilance, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on July 25, 2013 at 10 Miles Back, Port Kaituma, North West District, he murdered Refford Williams.
Attorneys-at-Law Mandel Moore and Orinthia Schmidt are presenting the state’s case. Attorney-at-Law Keoma Griffith is representing Britton.
Reports indicate that Britton and Williams were employed at the same mining camp in the area.
On the day in question, they were reportedly involved in a heated argument during which Britton armed himself with a length of metal pipe and dealt Williams a lash to the rib cage.
After allegedly committing the act, Britton fled the scene, while the injured Williams, who had collapsed, was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A post mortem examination performed on his remains revealed that he died as a result of a ruptured spleen due to blunt trauma.
This trial continues today.
