Dear Editor,
I was relieved to see that very serious attention is being paid to the disease of cancer, particularly breast cancer in women. Recently I wrote to the media about my suspicion in this regard. In early 1965, at age 34 plus, I developed a painful underarm swelling, which entailed surgery and weeks of regular hospital aftercare. I was fine afterwards.
Then 20 years later, at age approaching 56, in the very spot, the same condition recurred, this time much worse, more painful becoming elongated down my side, eventually looking like a blown-up balloon. I had to have underarm surgery again.
Surgery produced a basin full of coloured liquid, and both the surgeon and the nurse wondered aloud “Where did all that come from”? Weeks of aftercare followed. It was all very painful. Sometime later the penny dropped, when I read an article about anti-perspirants and made a connection.
I concluded that sweat, not being able to escape outside, built a home inside – and thrived there! Now I use only deodorants – lightly. I think the possible connection between anti-perspirants and breast cancer may be worth a bit of research. For what it is worth.
