Dear Editor,
Recently, we were inundated by the story of the missing cocaine. The illegal drug item was taken into ‘safe keeping’ by law enforcement officers but when the exhibits were tendered in court the poundage of the illegal substance was considerably less than when it was tagged and placed in storage. Now, this is quite an embarrassing story as well as an indictment on the police force because folks are asking some serious questions like, how did the cocaine get out from this high security area? But before we become paranoid I would like to prod our recollection into a few glaring incidents involving the police.
Could you recall that there were two incidents involving the disappearance of high powered weapons from the Guyana Police Force’s arsenal? Twenty three AK 47 Rifles suddenly went missing and to date none of these can be accounted for? Even more distressing is the fact that no one was ever convicted much less prosecuted for this grave breach of national security? Who were the ones responsible and why weren’t they prosecuted? I guarantee that this cocaine incident is not the first of such occurrences and it would certainly not be the last.
Having a cowshed fitted with security cameras actually does nothing to stamp out the rampant corruption that is so vividly evident amongst some members of the force. For a long lasting solution to this kind of lawlessness is to find the officers (and they are well aware of who they are) and let them face criminal charges. If this is not urgently tackled then this government would only be running around like headless chickens. Greater embarrassment awaits them.
