Dear Editor,
In their absolute greed for money and as part of their unscrupulous pattern of behaviour, I have observed some new goings-on by the City Council of Georgetown. Using their special contractor, who never needs to tender for projects within the city, and whose payments are always up to date unlike the two main garbage contractors, they have begun entering unoccupied properties and undertaken to weed and clean these properties with the intent to charge the owners extortionate fees, in order to keep this contractor employed.
This may be within their legal remit and may even seem commendable to some, but it is discriminatory, disingenuous and duplicitous.
Should they not put their own houses in order first before targeting private citizens whose yards are not meticulously manicured? Just look at the Le Repentir Cemetery! It is a national disgrace.
Most tombs are inaccessible due to the jungle that is allowed to thrive around them, the clogged drains, damaged and vandalised tombs and lack of bridges to get close to graves. Should they not be attending to that? Or are they awaiting the son of a senior political functionary to do the job sloppily as he has done in the past and be paid big bucks for it?
Look at the collapsed wharf at the Stabroek Market; a danger to life and limb for years now, but alas! The Council does nothing about it. They are awaiting Central Government to fix it.
The Kitty Market under rehabilitation for years now, whilst vendors suffer. Should they not be focusing on repairing the La penitence, Bourda, Stabroek and Kitty Markets clocks?
And what about their old decrepit buildings that are begging for repairs. Should they not focus on that rather that, private buildings? City Hall is on a march of folly, corruption and insensitivity.
And with no Local Government Commission, they are not even being given a slap on the wrist for all of their wrongdoings. The Councillors are sailing and the officers are having a field day in the meanwhile.
