Dear Editor,
I wish to respond to a letter (Kaieteur News, October 3, 2017) written by Mr. Leroy Nelson in which he requested clarifications regarding a letter purportedly written by Dr. Jagan to Mr. Anthony Greenwood, the then Secretary of State for Colonies in which the issue of partition was raised after the holding of the 1964 elections.
It is inconceivable that Dr. Jagan, being a strong and passionate anti-colonialist, nationalist and advocate for national unity would have would have suggested, even tangentially, the issue of partition for Guyana.
What Dr. Jagan did in his letter to Greenwood was merely to issue a warning to the British government that the refusal to accommodate the wishes of a large segment of the Guyanese people could play into the hands of extremist elements some of whom were already advocating partition for Guyana.
It is in the above context and the refusal by the British Government to follow established conventions in terms of arriving at an acceptable and fair manner at forming an alternative government to the PPP that any reference to the issue of partition has seen and examined. At no time did Dr. Jagan advocate partition and any attempt to so suggest is not only disingenuous but also an attempt to besmirch his name and reputation as a champion of a free and united Guyana.
It is important to note that Dr. Jagan made several attempts prior to the 1964 elections to form a coalition government between the PPP and the PNC but all efforts were stymied by the British Government which had already made up its mind to remove Dr. Jagan and the PPP from office and install the PNC-UF coalition into the seat of power mainly out of ideological and geo-political considerations. I hope the above explanation would serve to dispel any myths and fabrications on the issue of partition as raised by Mr. Nelson in his letter.
