The Guyana Prison Service will soon be in receipt of its very own Passenger Cargo Vessel which will provide safe transportation for prisoners.
The $118M vessel was inspected yesterday at the shipyard of the Guyana National Industrial
Company Incorporated (GNIC) by Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan.
Ramjattan expressed contentment in the fact that the Prison Service will soon have its own boat by the end of November which would reduce the dependence on using private boats.
“GNIC seems to be doing an extremely good job. I am no expert, but having gone in there (the vessel), it is a pretty useful job. It will be able to hold 60 prisoners and 20 staff members. So Mr. Clinton Williams (Chairman of GNIC) and his team are doing a wonderful job…”
The construction of the Passenger Cargo Vessel for the Guyana Prison Service was awarded to the Guyana National Industrial Company Incorporated (GNIC). The project commenced in May, 2017. It is expected to be completed at the end of October.
The Twin Screw Passenger- Cargo Vessel has been designed for harbour and riverain service in Guyana.
It has accommodation for 80 passengers above the Main Deck as well as 60-ton cargo space below the main deck forward of the engine room. It contains three watertight bulkheads, which divides the hull in four compartments. The vessel will be designed with a free running speed to not less than minimum 12 knots. It will be fitted with two Perkins Diesel Engines developing about 500HP.
Additionally, the vessel will be steel welded in construction and will be of ABS Classification Standard. There will be transverse framing throughout, spacing and Engine Room according to design as well as transverse watertight bulkheads continuous from keel to deck to form forepeak, cargo hold, engine room and steering gear compartment. There will also be two rudders to be designed and fitted to give maximum steering efficiency for a vessel of this type.
