Why do we have to fight for those we already fought for?

Dear Editor,
The English poet, theologian and philosopher Samuel Coleridge is quoted as saying that “Common sense is an uncommon degree in what the world calls wisdom. I am in concurrence with him except that although it is said to be common yet everyone does not possess it. To fully understand my message, it is imperative that readers be presented with a full understanding of what commonsense really is.
Therefore common sense has been defined as a person possessing the basic ability to perceive, understand and judge things, which is shared by nearly all people and can reasonably be expected of nearly all people without any need for debate. Albeit this may seem common and simple, the reality is that it is not. Daily I read about my fellow citizens and their growing disappointment and disenchantment with the actions of those whom they voted into office. They now find themselves in a boat having given a certain party their vote.
Having some interest in present day Guyanese politics, I must confess that there are some aspects which falls outside my realm of comprehension, for example, why after the populace have fought to put certain people in certain political/governmental positions, now in return have to go back and fight with the same people that they fought for. It leaves me wondering what the initial purpose was anyway! No one will really and truly fully understand politics until they understand that politicians are not trying to solve their own problems—of which getting elected and re-elected are numbers one and two. Whatever is number three is far behind.
The sad and disturbing aspect of this entire present day political scenario is that these very same politicians used the citizens to get where they wanted to be and now are, and once there have abandoned them. Such behaviour needs to be brought to the forefront, exposed and dealt with. Too many of these political figures feel that they have arrived and are untouchable. It would be a totally different picture if it was apparent that they were busy trying to hold up to all of the goals and objectives that they initially stated they wanted to tackle, when they were trying to win over the people. But the truth be known and told the majority of the time they are not busy.
Please do not misconstrue what has been written, as I am not referring to all politicians, for there are many that are carrying out the job for which they were elected, and still have enough humility to return and show their gratitude to the people that supported them. However, there are others who when they were running for office were overly visible, attending every function or event whether invited or not. Now, firmly installed they send representatives to represent them instead of making personal appearances.
Yet another reason why I ask the question, “Why must we fight those that we already fought for”. It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. The voting populace must hold those in office accountable for carrying out the task they voted to do, thereby setting things right and avoiding a fight.
