Dear Editor,
Residents living in the heart of Anna Regina town i.e. the northern half which includes Belle Street are presently suffering from a disappearing trickle of water being supplied by G.W.I. This has been the situation for three years now. This writer made myriad visits to the officer at the Anna Regina [and one visit was a delegation of consumers] only to be treated to a string of preposterous reasons:
a) The design of the layout of pipes was faulty
b) A change made in distribution pattern
c) Some consumers siphon off the water as soon as it is released
Countless meetings with the manager, who is well aware of the situation, have brought no change, no relief. We are even now getting a disappearing trickling at ground level. At one time he said that he needed sometime to install another pipeline to ensure adequate supply. This never happened. We were given scheduled times [05:00 hrs to 10:00/10:30 hrs and 15:00 hrs onwards] but these schedules were never adhered to, rather we ended up with an erratic supply so frustrating that one forgets one has taps, which when turned on would give water.
Sometimes the trickle is so weak that it takes ten to twelve minutes to fill an ordinary size bucket. During weekends and holidays we get a puny trickle even at ground level. Now consumers get little or no water upstairs and have to fetch water and fill up several buckets for chores. We ask the question: why must we go through this nightmare, this burdensome suffering when two areas that run past where we live [Cotton Field and the New Housing Area aback Anna Regina] are getting more than an ample supply?
Three years ago water supply was so adequate that the overhead tank upstairs would fill in a short period of time. How come this retrogression? G.W.I has promised the nation the lofty ideal that it wanted to ensure consumers get potable water twenty four-seven. We do not see this happening any time soon. A strong appeal is made to those in charge in Government and G.W.I to move quickly to bring relief to suffering citizens
