Dear Editor,
An interesting letter appeared in the newspapers entitled ‘Attempts are being made to discredit the PPP and Dr. Jagan by an author Hydar Ally. Apparently, the letter was an exercise by the author to correct some misinformation peddled by the Ms. Amna Ally and the PNCR in the public space.
In the highly contested political environment in Guyana, this is par for the course. Positions are articulated and fastened to within that binary. Those invested in the dominance of their party very often push certain narratives into the public space purported as unvarnished facts. Editor, it is against that background that I seek clarity from Hydar Ally on a matter specific to the issue of Dr. Jagan’s role in the events after the 1964 General Elections.
Note is made of Mr. Ally’s efforts at correcting the record presented by Amna Ally. In doing so, he reminded us that Dr. Jagan and the PPP ‘won the largest bloc of votes – 47%.’ However, in the interest of historical accuracy and setting the record straight for the public, can Mr. Ally explain to the reading public the reasons and context for a letter written by Dr.Jagan to Colonial Secretary Sir Anthony Greenwood raising the issue of partition and his refusal to resign rather than to accept defeat at the hands of the proposed allied parties at the 1964 elections?
The noted academic and history professor Colin Palmer in his book, ‘Cheddie Jagan and the Politics of Power’ highlighted that letter raising the issue of partition. Given that Mr. Ally has a vested interest in correcting contrived or, invented records; one hopes that he uses your newspaper pages in an effort at helping us to understand those facts.
