Dear Editor,
A contract was recently awarded to Ivor Allen for the construction of two wooden bridges at Hope Coconut Industries Limited (HCIL). The current existing bridges were neglected over the past years as a result of both poor maintenance and financial constraints.
In its current drive to improve essential infrastructure at HCIL, commonly known as Hope Estate, Management of HCIL through the Ministry of Agriculture, has embarked on a drive to improve the services to farmers at HCIL. According to the General Manager of HCIL, Ricky Roopchand, ‘this is only the beginning of better things to come, since HCIL is currently, as a result of improved management, is in a healthy financial position to undertake projects to better serve farmers’ needs.
With support from the Ministry of Agriculture, HCIL is working assiduously to return Hope Estate to its earlier glorious days when the Estate was one of the leading producers of coconuts in Guyana. The current management of HCIL with support for the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) made it possible for an already established coconut nursery that has the capacity to produce 50,000 coconut seedlings per year. In addition, a coconut germ plasm has already been established at Hope Estate. To add to this drive, works are currently been undertaken on a 36 acres coconut demonstration plot which will be used both as a model farm and training facility for coconut farmers.
Only recently, as a direct result of the intervention of the Minister of Agriculture, Honorable Noel Holder resulted in the rehabilitation of the main access road at Hope Estate which brought tremendous relief to both farmers and residence at Hope Estate. The progress made is a direct result of hard work and unbending determination that got Hope Estate in its current pitch, which is a strong indication that the implementation of the restoration programme for HICL is effective and bearing fruits.
