A Friendship, East Bank Demerara man found himself in court yesterday after it was alleged that he sold a minibus valued $3.1M for $300,000. The bus was given to him by a man whom he was supposed to pay $7,000 daily, after working the minibus.
Patrick Watts, 24, appeared before Principal Magistrate, Judy Latchman, and denied the charge which alleged that between August 24 and September 11, last, at D’Urban Street, Werk-en-Rust, being entrusted with Elvis Smith’s Toyota minibus; he fraudulently sold the bus and converted the money to his own use.
Watts was released on $100,000 bail and instructed to return to court on October 16, for statements.
According to Police Prosecutor, Shawn Gonsalves, Smith entrusted Watts with the vehicle to work and gave him $7,000 daily.
However, after failing to make contact with Watts for a few days, Smith made a report to the East La Penitence Police Station. The prosecutor said that Smith received information that his bus was parked somewhere in Timehri, East Bank Demerara.
Upon arrival and inspecting the vehicle, Smith noticed that several parts of the minibus were missing.
According to the prosecutor, Watts admitted to police in a caution statement that he sold the bus for $300,000.
