A concerted effort to strengthen the functioning of the National Codex Structure in Caribbean countries including Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Saint Lucia and Suriname was recently concluded. This structure is designed to support the establishment of international food standards for the protection and health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the food trade.
The Government of Chile concluded the two year “South-south project” which was aimed at strengthening Codex functioning at the national level of the five participating countries.
The objectives of the project were to raise awareness on the importance of Codex to National Authorities and Codex stakeholders in each of the five countries and to improve the knowledge and structure of each (beneficiary) country so as to effectively participate in Codex.
Five main activities were conducted under this project and these included a coordination meeting which was held in Chile in February 2016 and the sensitization mission and technical workshops.
Secondly, in June 2016, a Chilean delegation met with key policymakers in Guyana to sensitize them to the importance of Codex and its work. Additionally, a national workshop was held with Codex stakeholders to increase awareness and knowledge on the importance of having a proper Codex structure in the country.
Thirdly, in November 2016, a session of the Food and Agriculture Organisation/World Health Organisation Coordinating Committee on Latin America and the Caribbean (CCLAC) was held. This meeting was held to promote, guide and enhance countries abilities to effectively participate in all regional and international Codex meetings.
Fourthly, representatives from the five member-states also had the opportunity to attend an internship in Chile. Two delegates from Guyana’s National Codex Committee attended the internship. The internship allowed participants to share their experiences on the functioning of Codex. It also allowed participants to explore the food safety system in Chile. Practical work was also done to develop a national procedural manual for Codex activities in Guyana.
Lastly, the Project concluded in September 2017 when a delegation from Chile came to Guyana to hand over copies of the National Procedural Manuals to the Government of Guyana.
Being a part of the overall Codex Structure allows stakeholders in Guyana to access food standards developed, comment on Codex standards at every stage of development, improve the competitiveness of their food businesses and allow access to allowable limits for food additives, food contaminants and pesticide residue.
