Dear Editor,
It is with great consternation that I learnt of some atrocious behaviour being exhibited by some senior public servants of the Guyanese people, in the execution of their duties, and the apparent inaction of the President and Prime Minister in addressing these shortcomings. I strongly believe that the handling of some situations by some very senior persons do not reflect the will of our leaders. I believe that the authority of our leaders is being challenged much too often now. A sample of specific situations to which I refer would be:
(1) City Hall and the Town Clerk’s bullying of citizens of Georgetown and the cleaning contractors who fulfilled their side of the contract
(2)The disrespect shown to the Chief Judge, and disrespectful behaviour displayed in court by the Attorney General
(3) The treatment of downtrodden citizens of other countries, who are now seeing our country as a glimmer of hope when the light seems to be fading elsewhere.
Mr Editor, the third example should be of great concern to all of us. Somewhere along the line Guyanese holders of U. S., Canadian or some other country’s citizenship, and those aspiring to be, benefitted from a relative or friend who in the early days put themselves in similar circumstances as those from other countries who are being hounded by us now.
Haven’t Guyana and Guyanese businesses and institutions eventually benefitted from another country’s humane handling of uninvited Guyanese?
Mr Editor, I would like to close with a situation that had a profound effect on me. Early in the brief but very positive tenure of President H.D. Hoyte, Guyana awoke to the news that the Junior Minister in the Ministry of Education was relieved of his duties overnight. With that swift and decisive action, President Hoyte sent more than one strong message. Two of those messages to me were; there would be no tolerance for law breaking or the condoning of law breaking by anyone in his administration, and anyone having the privilege of serving in his administration will do so in a manner that reflects his moral values.
