Dear Editor,
As a patriotic Guyanese I feel ashamed, loss of pride, dejected and a host of other negative emotions for my country, after reading the article; “ Houston homes for removal at proposed site for new Demerara River Bridge;” in your Sunday edition, Sept 10.
In that article, it described the proposed bridge. Who would want a bridge that is a minimal upgrade to an existing version built 50 years ago?
Come on man! Where is the thinking that brings pride, joy and love for country? We owe this to our children and grandchildren. They are entitled to inherit a better country, one that is competing in a world of state of the art infrastructure and developments. Unfortunately, it seems that there are minds among us that do not embrace this challenge ( I hope this is not so). In my opinion taking the easy road (proposed type of bridge) is not the best decision considering the reasons above.
Mr Editor I am not disputing the reason for or proposed site for the bridge. My only issue is that as a developing country competing with others, we deserve better; especially as a legacy for our future generations.
Finally, with reference to the same article a statement was made in relation to the existing bridge. I quote” the cost of maintenance alone has outstripped the revenue.” Not a surprise. Anyone passing through the toll booths at its eastern end cannot fail to see the absence of an anti-fraud system of collection. Mr Editor, this is so blatant and conspicuous, it is obvious that people are deliberately asleep at the wheel. Thank you.
Lawrence David
