Berbice, Guyana and West Indies leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo is the latest Test player to throw their support behind Rose Hall Youth & Sports Club’s Hilbert Foster if he seeks to become the new Berbice Cricket Board President when that Board holds its first Elections since 2014, on October 8.
Nagamootoo, who turns 42 on October 9 and broke Clyde Butt’s (270) record for most Regional First-Class wickets against Barbados in the 2005 Carib Beer Cup, said as a former Berbice player he is sad to hear about the way cricket in Berbice and Guyana is being run.
“As somebody that play for Berbice I am sad to hear what some senior Berbice players tell me about some of the things that are happening with cricket over there. I have known Mr. Foster since long now and from what I am hearing about him here (USA) I fully support him if he decides to become the President of the Berbice Board,” said Nagamootoo who grew up in Whim Corentyne Berbice.
Nagamootoo who played the first of five Test matches against England at the Oval in 2000, is one of few cricketers to play each of his Test in a different Continent (Africa, Europe, Australia, Asia and South America) and taken 12 wickets including Sachin Tendulkar at Bourda, while his highest score is 68 against Australia.
The leggie, who played his last Test against India in 2002, informed that he has been told that someone from the Guyana Cricket Board has been calling the clubs in Berbice and instructing them who to vote for on October 8.
“If that is true then it is wrong for people from town to tell Berbicians what to do and uncle Mosses (Prime Mister Mosses Nagamootoo) should get involved since cricket is Guyana’s national sport,” said Nagamootoo who has 18 wickets from 24 ODIs with a best of 4-32.
Nagamootoo is one of 18 Berbicians to play at the highest level and Captained Berbice in the late 1990s. He said that if Foster runs for the Presidency and wins he would be able to get lots of sponsorship for competitions since he already has a track record of that at his club.
“Mr Foster is a ‘bad man’ when it comes to getting companies to put their money into cricket, plus he is good at organising things, so I would say he is the best man for the job (of President).” Nagamootoo, who has a century, seven fifties and 370 wickets from 102 First Class matches.
When contacted Foster said his club’s office is being bombarded by those encouraging him to go for the position and he is now seriously considering vying for the Presidency. Foster confirmed that former Test Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, who was the first to publicly endorse him, had called to convince him to run for the Presidency.
