….ventilation problem to be fixed
The 911 Emergency systems will be finished before the end of the year. This is according to Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan. The Minister gave this assurance at an Alliance for Change (AFC) press conference yesterday at the party’s headquarters.
The Minister stated that efficiency will be brought back to calls made to the 911 Emergency Hotline.
The telephone company, Digicel, was awarded a $27M contract to do the reconstruction of the system in the facility and is currently connecting the system. The Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GTT) will be setting up the fibre optic cable in the station and the training of staff for the calls system.
Recently, the Parliamentary Committee on the Security Sector examined the works done at the Brickdam Police Station. The Minister stated that it will be open for viewing to the press at a later date.
Consultations were done with local telephone service providers earlier in the year for the establishment of the 911 (Guyana Police Force) and 912 (Guyana Fire Service) emergency lines. This system will improve the efficiency for immediate interaction between police and citizens in time of need since there is a lack of communication in some areas.
This re-establishment was due to technical difficulties in the past call system.
The Minister also stated that he is looking into problems relating to the Brickdam lock-ups. He also stated that the work to be done on the lock ups will be done as soon as the 911 system is finished.
He also reiterated that the ventilation of the station was compromised due to design problems and will be fixed shortly. Some of the walls will also be reconstructed and emphasis will be put into fixing the toilets of the station.
However, he also stated that the money awarded for the works at the Brickdam Station will only be available when work is completed on buildings of the GPF along Young Street, Georgetown.
The Minister also stated that the contractors must be discrete and understand the works to be done.
