Two men were last week apprehended and charged for being in possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking. The arrest resulted from the police at Weldaad being vigilant and alert.
On September 6, last, around noon, ranks manning a road block at Weldaad, West Coast Berbice, became suspicious of motor car HC7293 when the vehicle diverted from the main thoroughfare. It was bound for Georgetown.
When the car was intercepted in an access road, the ranks conducted a search, and Terrence Forde, 33, who gave his address as 7 West Ruimveldt, was found with a black haversack between his legs.
The bag contained a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. Both Forde, and Ralph Benn, who was also travelling in the car, were told of the offence and they were taken to the Weldaad Police Station for further processing. The illegal substance weighed 920 grams. Ralph Benn, 24, gave his address as Sir David Rose Street, Rose Hall, Berbice.
When the men appeared in court the next day, both pleaded not guilty to the charges. They were denied bail and ordered to return to court on September 20.
In another matter, the police were operating another road block at Weldaad on Thursday, September 7, last, when motor car, PVV 8731, driven by 21 year old Brandon Thom, was intercepted, after the driver failed to comply with police instructions.
When ordered to stop he drove into an access road north of the Weldaad Public Road.
When the police gave chase the occupants were observed throwing a black bag from the car. Thom, who gave his address as 286 East Canje was taken into custody together with the other occupant Wincel Thomas, 24, of 44 Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme.
They were taken to the Weldaad Police Station where the contents of the bag, suspected to be cannabis was processed. The stuff weighed 550 grams .The men were subsequently charged. They appeared in the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court last Friday and pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Bail was denied, and the accused are expected to return to court on September 27.
