Dear Editor,
In support of the APNU+AFC Government’s introduction of 14% VAT on water and electricity, President David Granger is noted to have said that it will enforce conservation. Yet, in Linden where some of his supporters reside, President David Granger refuses to raise the price of electricity so that Lindeners can pay their fair share of the electricity bill. Lindeners as we all know, consume more electricity than the average Guyanese. Clearly there is a case whereby enforced conservation of electricity is needed in Linden as opposed to the current squander-mania. As well as, President Granger government has sacked thousands of Amerindians and sugar workers (allegedly to end subsidies). Yet, he refuses to end the electricity subsidy in Linden.
Such hypocrisy from the APNU+AFC government of President David Granger cannot go unnoticed. If you are going to end subsidy for one, you need to be consistent and end subsidy for all. If you are going to enforce electricity conservation for one then you need to be consistent and enforce electricity conservation for all.
This lack of consistency by the APNU+AFC government of President David Granger brings into sharp focus that President David Granger is not governing Guyana in the interest of all Guyanese but only doing so for his supporters. Since the APNU+AFC Government of President David Granger came into power in May 2015, there has been little effort at job creation. What they have done is to sack nearly 2,000 Amerindians, sack thousands of sugar workers (and plan to sack more) allegedly to save money yet they are finding the money (US$12.5m or over GYD2.5Bn) to give to certain villages.
It is time for the APNU+AFC Government to get serious about job creation and not close off opportunities to Guyanese especially in a country of high unemployment. Under the PPP/C Government, Guyanese were getting out of poverty albeit slowly. But progress was being made in this regard. Under the APNU+AFC Government, because of the mass redundancies, Guyanese are being pushed back into poverty.
What has President David Granger, whose Government is anti-poor as can also be attested to by the increase in taxation including VAT on water and electricity, got against poor people earning a living? President David Granger erroneous view is that you can sack people to save money, and to provide services that people will not be able to afford since they do not have a job to pay for these services.
