Dear Editor,
Please publish this letter as early as possible regarding my struggle with NIS concerning my old age benefit claims. In mid May 2017, myself and my contact person attended a meeting (by invitation) at NIS Head Office in Brickdam posted by NIS Deputy General Manager- Mr. Boston, Public Relations Officer –Ms. Diane Lewis Baxter, Chief Inspector-Mr.Yearwood, and two officials.
During the meeting, Mr.Yearwood stated that he did a thorough investigation regarding my employment with Toolsie Persaud Ltd. (TPL) and found no record or evidence that I was an employee of TPL whose management strongly denied I was ever an employee and he (Yearwood) believes TPL’s management.
Mr. Editor I was momentarily stunned by this unexpected and appalling statement. Here is the chief inspector of NIS with copies of my pay slips showing NIS and PAYE deductions made from my salaries and an official letter from the Human Resources Consultant, Mr. Bostwick verifying I was an employee for over nineteen years (1969-1744, 1979-1998-, 2002-2004) knowingly discrediting substantial facts raising suspicions of my integrity and sanity. I am still pondering whether the chief inspector is being manipulated. The deputy general manager intervened immediately and said he will attend to my benefit claim and set 16th June 2017 for an update to which I agreed. I was also advised to get at least two references from former managers to support my employment with TPL. This was obtained and delivered to Mr. Boston. To date 2nd September 2017 despite several phone calls, text messages and visits to NIS Head Office, Mr. Boston is elusive.
A letter on my behalf (will not name the source) was sent to the Minister of Social Protection for investigation and not hearing from the honorable Minister, several copies of this said letter was hand delivered to the same Minister’s office and the Minister of Labour. To date 2nd September 2017, no respond from either ministry. This highly official letter seems ignored.
I’ve seen the Minister of Labour, Mr. Keith Scott on television addressing officials of security firms vehemently denouncing employment of women late at nights, inadequate working conditions, excessive working hours and salaries below the prescribed rate and advocating strong support for workers by his ministry. I will pretend Minister Scott is unaware of my dilemma and will again hand deliver all relevant information regarding my employment and my contributions to NIS pension fund. Minister Scott can now confront TPL with these facts, have my matter solved, give hope to former employees with similar complaints against this firm and prove to all Guyanese that he is not into rhetoric and spineless but a minister full of gumption. Thank you Mr. Editor, Hoping the Minister will take the challenge.
