Police constable Satrohan Gowkarran who struck down pedestrian Quintin Anderson last Friday while driving under the influence has been fined and his licence revoked.
Constable Gowkarran appeared before Magistrate Roshell Liverpool at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court, on Tuesday to answer a charge of driving under the influence. He was fined $7,500 after pleading guilty and his driver’s licence was endorsed.
The investigation into the accident is still incomplete. The victim who was transferred to the GPHC, is said to be in a stable condition.
Quintin Anderson, 20, of Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara, was reportedly preparing to cross the Stewartville, West Coast Demerara Public Road last Friday when Constable Gowkarran struck him down.
It is alleged that the accused was heading from Parika at a fast rate when he swerved into the corner where Anderson was standing.
An eyewitness said, in the wake of the collision, he rushed over and saw Anderson lying on the roadway, with injuries to his leg.
“The driver couldn’t ah go nowhere. He couldn’t even help heself, cause he de drunk like a fish,” the eyewitness added.
The driver was subsequently detained at the Leonora Police Station.
Anderson, who sustained a broken arm and foot as well as a broken nose, remains hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
