With a relatively “new kid on the block”, according to the Director of National Center for Education Resource Development (NCERD), Jennifer Cumberbatch, the Ministry is well set to battle the wars of education in Guyana.
Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry, said, “The Ministry of Education is well positioned to deliver and I have already seen the capabilities in the years to come which can only be measured by tangible results some of which we have seen and I have to say it is very refreshing.”
The Minister commented on the latest results of both the Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) and Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) and termed them as “refreshing”. The National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) has seen significant improvement in Mathematics and English while in the other areas, much improvement was not made. Plans are in progress of rectifying and dealing with this issue according to her.
At the meeting with the Minister of Education (MOE), Nicolette Henry, she reiterated the need for stakeholders to participate in the growth and development of schools.
”Education Month gives the Ministry of Education both the time and the opportunity to reach out to all our stakeholders… teachers, students, parents, organizations and the general public. We will galvanize our resources to showcase education, whether it be through fairs, rallies, the radio, television programmes and social media to make appeals of the activities scheduled throughout the month.”
The Kato Secondary School, Region Eight, will also be commissioned.
As it relates to the plans and the way ahead for the government, she highlighted some of the perspectives that will be dealt with.
She said the priority of the ministry, this year, will focus on “reducing the disparity in education by making sure all schools are working to the same high standards.” The government, according to her, has an objective to strengthen the administration in all regions and to improve the delivery of education as well as other public services.
In keeping with this policy, the establishing of Regional Technical Institutes is planned which will give the opportunity of technical education to more of Guyana’s youths.
”Improving the quality of other education will be continued revised testing methods and embracing the enhancement of technology in the classroom,” said the Minister.
She added that it is the government’s business to also ensure that the youths of Guyana benefit from a quality education. This is being proven by the government through initiatives such as the 5 Bs and others.
The Ministry in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will host International Literacy Day, which will be held under the theme ‘Literacy within a Digital World’.
“Children who are differently-able should not be left behind”.
In keeping with this statement, the Ministry has planned events that would accommodate the differently able children.
“I am happy to see a variety of creative activities that also include physical education, culture and of course, the partnership with Neal and Massy with the empowering of 10,000 girls to mark National Education Day.
During this month, the ministry has also planned an outreach to men which will promote male engagement in schools both inside and out of classrooms.
The minister said she hopes to reverse the perception of male being teachers and to encourage males to make teaching their calling. The aim is to increase the population of male teachers across the nation.
“Education is certainly the foundation and the key to good life for our nation and I look forward to the days ahead, in particular this month where education steps into the spot light here in Guyana”.
