Dear Editor,
Allow us a space within your prestigious newspaper to express our views as it relates to the management of the Maha Sabha. Mr. Editor, as most would know, the Maha Sabha is a trust organization that serves the purpose within society to propagate the Hindu religion through charity and humanitarian works for all Guyanese regardless of religion or race. Mr. Editor, after careful investigation, we have personally found this to not be the case. As the many letters published in the press recently would have established- the Sabha is indeed under poor management.
The tearing away of the fabric of this prestigious organization starts with its organizing secretary. This is a position that allows for money of the Sabha to be directed towards the funding of charitable ventures in different parts of Guyana. However the Sabha has not done anything close to charity in the past ten to twelve years and the person filling this position has seemed to accumulate over this span of time, and the tremendous wealth and nothing consistent to show how it was achieved. Mr. Editor can you blame us for our suspicions?
Moreso, Mr. Editor, very recently the mother of a member of the mandir returned from the United States and donated a hefty sum towards the temple for the purpose of purchasing items to conduct regular worship, the money was given and as customary a receipt should have been issued, however, Mr. Editor unto a day like today that specific member is still waiting for a call from the said individual to uplift their receipt. Though accusation is being made, a receipt should have been forwarded, the absence of which could lead questions to be asked, for example; in what ways has the organization benefitted from our hard earned money?
Mr. Editor, several persons wrote in the past weeks expressing disgust at how the Sabha is being managed being one of the oldest and most respected organizations in this country. Many even blamed the priest for its downfall, however Mr. Editor, any sensible person would know; if the organizing secretary is not functioning the organization then most definitely would not be able to fulfill its function. The temple is hardly being cleaned and anyone passing its head quarters on Lamaha Street can see the dilapidated condition it is currently in.
Finally Mr. Editor, we are leaving the option for the organizing secretary individual to respond publicly and defend his.her position at the Sabha. If this is not the case or they are not to be blamed, let them express such for the public to see, otherwise he/she should do the honorable thing and resign from the Sabha and thus save the organization from further humiliation and shame.
Mr. Editor, writing this letter was the last thing we had hoped to resort to, but after reading what was said in the press over the last few weeks and the disgust and frustration we feel seeing how the Sabha is immobilized and drifting, we believe this option will definitely bring the change this organization so much desire. It is my fervent hope that this letter is published and by so doing bring relief to an organization in dire needs of the public help.
