West Indies Under-16 Captain Sachin Singh says their recent tour to Borehamwood, England was a learning experience and will serve the players well going forward. Speaking with Kaieteur Sport recently, Singh who was the lone Guyanese on the team stated that he relished the opportunity to lead the region and the players supported him well.
The West Indies Under-16s won three out of their six 50-over games and were successful in both of their T20 fixtures on the tour which commenced on August 16 and concluded on August 23.
Opener Singh accumulated 230 runs in seven innings with his highest being 56 not out versus Hertfordshire in the first T20 game which the West Indies won by nine wickets. Seth Agard of Barbados made 47 not out in the same match.
In the second T20 Singh did not bat but his team won by 20 runs after making 150, batting first. Lee Solomon of the Windward Islands struck a half century. In the 50-over matches, Singh’s best scores was 48 versus Ireland’s U-15s; his innings handed the regional side a five-wicket victory as they successfully chased 180 at Wormsley Cricket Club.
The Demerara Cricket Club player followed up that innings with 46 against East London, leading his team to a four-wicket win after they were set 160. The talented player explained that the players acclimatized quickly and playing as a unit was largely responsible for their success. He added that they had to play the ball late since the conditions there were conducive to swing bowling.
Singh said being Captain of the regional side was a challenge and he relished the opportunity. “Being named captain of the team motivated me so I had to be at my best throughout the tour. I saw it as a challenge which I relished and self confidence is important,” he said.
The left-hander, who represented Guyana in the regional U-16 tournament which was played in Trinidad and Tobago in July, stated that the players supported him well and performed when it matter; he singled out Matthew Forde of Barbados for special mention.
Singh indicated that former West Indies great Gordon Greenidge visited the team while on tour and that motivated the players. “I learnt a lot from the tour, it is important to learn to play off different surfaces from a young age because this is one of the challenges for batsmen.”
The fifteen-year-old Singh, who is currently training with the Cricket Guyana Inc. Academy players, has been included in the East Bank Demerara franchise team for the upcoming local Franchise League. He said that he is looking forward to the tournament and wants to be among the runs for his team.
The team was coached by Corey Collymore and Rohan Nurse and Managed by Robert Samuels. Singh expressed gratitude to coaches Clive Grimmond, Michael Hyles Franco, Garvin Nedd, Mark Harper, Claude St. John, his dad Inderjeet Singh, Henry Chase, GCB Territorial Development Officer Colin Stuart and sponsors.
