The Schools’ Welfare Department in Region Three yesterday donated 20 backpacks along with stationery supplies in anticipation of the new school year.
It was done in keeping of the Department’s commitment to ensure all school children attain fundamental school supplies.
The idea was birthed after ‘Truancy Campaigns’ were held in the Region. It was discovered during the campaign that students’ attendance was being affected as a result of several issues, inclusive of financial constraints.
Education Officer, Devendra Persaud, highlighted that the contribution is just the first phase, as the Department is expecting an additional 1000 backpacks before the reopening of school. It was on this note that he advocated for parents to ensure their children attend school regularly and punctually so as to better benefit from a “quality education”.
Senior Schools Welfare Officer, Azharuddin Zahur during his remarks, instructed that every child must be in school and urged the Schools’ Welfare Department to ensure that the laws are being adhered to. He warned parents that noncompliance with these laws could result in court action being taken against them.
Student attendance, which is a basic step for securing good grades, was elaborated upon, and led to Zahur highlighting that the responsibility for this issue is not only that of the Welfare Department but all Guyanese as well.
Yesterday’s event was made possible with support from Republic Bank, Triple A Supermarket, June Charles and Family and Andrew Singh.
