Dear Editor,
To repeat a headline I remember from many years ago, taken from a BG newspaper, “Wither are we drifting”? I felt ever so sad when I read of the recent deaths of a 12-year old girl and a 15-year old boy. The circumstances seemed to quote the Bard, “a canopy most fatal”. Youngsters at that age “in a relationship”? What does that say of parental care and supervision? To me, it says the youngsters found mainly comfort in each other’s company. And the thought crossed my mind that many youngsters in Guyana are in a similar position, while families try to eke out a daily living. Perhaps a reason for so many teenage pregnancies.
Did the young man’s family know of the ‘relationship’ when they left him alone to look after their house while they visited another country, thus causing him to feel completely abandoned? That happens when there is little communication between parents and their children. Many children with working mothers feel the same. I know. Many parents do not realise that males at that age and stage – in between boy and man – are very vulnerable to circumstances not faced before, and cannot cope without wise help. Let us hope both families find support and help within their community and elsewhere.
