The prosecution is still to call its final witness in the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the murder of Ganesh Ramlall, who was shot and killed by bandits at his La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara home in July 2015.
The witness, who is a doctor, was expected to tender a post mortem report yesterday when the matter came up before Magistrate Rushelle Liverpool at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.
However, State Prosecutor Stacy Goodings, who was holding for Attorney-at-Law Nigel Hughes, the substantive prosecutor, told the court that the witness was not present.
Lennox ‘Soldier Man’ Roberts, 32, of 2279 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara; Fazeel ‘Javed’ Bacchus, 21, of 7 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara and Kurt ‘Banana’ Erskine, 35, of 285 Section ‘C’, Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara are currently on remanded for the indictable offence.
The killing allegedly occurred on July 5, 2015.
Ramlall called ‘Boyo’ of Lot C La Jalousie, West Coast Demerara, was reportedly shot seven times about the body after bandits attacked his home.
The 48-year-old owner of Regent Multiplex Mall, Regent Street, Georgetown had reportedly just returned home from a barbecue, when he was accosted by four men, one of whom shot him to the head and chest before relieving him of jewellery and a wallet before escaping.
The PI was adjourned until September 11, when Prosecutor Hughes will reply to submissions from Senior Counsel Bernard DeSantos who is representing Roberts.
Counsel’s submissions are in relation to a Voir Dire (trial within a trial) which was conducted to ascertain the admissibility of an alleged caution statement given to Police Inspector Detective Suraj Singh by Roberts. Corporal Melville witnessed the taking of the statement at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary, Georgetown sometime back in July 2015.
However, Senior Counsel De Santos has objected to the alleged caution statement being admitted into evidence.
DeSantos is contending that his client was brutally assaulted by detectives to give the statement.
Counsel had earlier indicated that he intends to summon two witnesses to testify in the Voir Dire.
The prosecution has already closed its case.
Earlier on in the PI, Police Inspector Suraj Singh, Police Sergeants Rodwell Sarrabo and Salaish Roopnarine and Corporal Heranjan Deonarine were among those who testified.
Also testifying were members of the Guyana Prison Service.
