Dear Editor,
From time to time we see that criminals get sentenced in the Magistrates’ courts, appeal their cases, take them to the High court and get bail, and while out on bail, they commit some hideous crimes such as murder, rape and robbery under arms. Another thing; criminals get sentenced in the Magistrates’ courts, appeal their case, and take them to the High court after they walk out of court “a free man”. When are we going to put our foot down on such nonsense? Picture this; an individual rapes or kills one of your relatives, goes to trial and for some reason or another, he gets off (wins the case), comes back in the same village or town and brags about his victory, how do you think the relatives of the victim feel? Have you ever put that into consideration?
Also, persons being caught with illegal guns and ammunition, persons discharging loaded firearms at people or even a policeman, of course when caught, get a soft sentence like two (2) years. Such people during their exploits, hurt, murder and rob innocent people of their hard earned money and valuables. When you the intended victim retaliates like shooting them with a licensed gun or hurt them in some other way, you will be dealt with seriously by law enforcement officers, as if you were the perpetrator. Right now crime is on the increase and to a certain extent getting out of control. So please don’t make Guyana a safe haven for criminals.
