The United States Embassy in Georgetown has announced that three young, talented Guyanese entrepreneurs have been selected for the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) Professional Fellows Programme, 2017.
According to the information provided via the US Embassy’s official social website page, the three Guyanese representatives have been identified as Suzanne Hamilton, Founder of Sosh Solutions; Charles Hutson, Founder of ECab; and Christine Profitt, Founder of The Scrubs Hub.
The trio was selected from among over 3,000 applications submitted from the region.
According to her profile, Hamilton is the Founder of Sosh Solutions in Linden. Her business offers globally recognized professional qualification courses for local entrepreneurs and addresses the unavailability of professional and youth development opportunities in the fields of accounting, business, and finance.
Hutson’s profile shows that he founded Ecab, a mobile app for calling taxis – allowing cab-seekers to electronically hail the closest available cab, while ensuring that drivers can earn more by saving on gasoline and time.
Profitt, meanwhile, is the visionary behind the Scrubs Hub, an organization that provides quality medical garments and personal protective gear for medical professionals across Guyana at an affordable cost.
As part of her social responsibility, the YLAI representative has committed a percentage of the organization’s income towards the “I CAN” project for disadvantaged youth, single parents, and other young adults in Agricola.
The YLAI initiative was launched to build linkages between young leaders across the hemisphere and to expand opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs and civil society leaders.
In October 2016, the YLAI brought together 250 young leaders from Latin America, the Caribbean, Guyana and the United States for an exchange programme that involves internship and skills-building workshops. The programme aims to ensure that young leaders have the necessary tools, skills, and network to tackle shared global challenges.
Their areas of interest included agriculture, clean energy, consulting, e-commerce, education, entrepreneurship development and support, food and beverage, food security, health care, hospitality, LGBTI rights, marketing and branding, mobile applications, and women and youth empowerment.
Successful candidates included Guyanese entrepreneur, Abbigale Loncke.
Loncke was among the few finalists selected to meet with then US President Barack Obama, in Peru during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. She is the founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Community Health Care, an agency which delivers home care needs for the elderly, sick, disabled and children, in the comfort of their homes. The agency also helps to train women, who are in need of employment and second chances, by offering them work as care-givers.
During an address to the (YLAI) participants and other guests in Peru, President Obama highlighted Loncke’s work.
