Dear Editor,
I read the recent piece about the “cruel’’ Government at present ruling Guyana (Freddie Kissoon’s column last Friday). So what’s new when ‘boys’ try to do men’s work? In the early 1960s, when our country was known as B.G., a colony ruled by the British, during a discussion on a prospective Independence move and a change of Prime Minister, the witty, charismatic, self-assured L.F.S. Burnham was seen by many as the most suitable person to take over as leader.
As the only woman in a group of men of varying ages in that discussion, when one of them said that “when a child comes of age, it should be given its independence”, I immediately asked “What if the child is an invalid”? Taken by surprise, they looked at one another, baffled, and did not answer.
Every leader must depend on team effort. That team must be willing, loyal and capable, if the outfit is to succeed – a strong house. Without that degree of commitment, a shaky house is created, exists for a while and then cannot stand. A worldwide political situation.
Unfortunately, Guyana has an ‘unusual’, perhaps unique, problem. Guyanese themselves have to solve their political problem; no one else can do that for us. May we survive as a nation!
