Churches are well known for the spiritual solace and education they provide to the community, but for the past two days it was all about healthy bodies when The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Guyana, hosted its annual health fair at Stabroek Market Square.
This venue attracted scores of persons who were traversing the downtown Georgetown area.
Persons sat under huge tents waiting to be seen by doctors and other persons including church members who lend voluntary service.
The event which was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Health began on Friday and culminated on Saturday with a grand crusade.
Some of the services offered were blood pressure and blood glucose testing, blood cholesterol testing, body mass index (BMI), dental services and eye testing.
Information was also provided on non communicable diseases.
Persons were allowed to speak with doctors concerning health problems affecting them.
Michael Chapp Jumbo, a member of the church, said that he was satisfied with the attendance.
He stated that the health fair is one of the many activities planned by the church to show its kindness and love to citizens. Chapp Jumbo added that everybody needs to pay attention to their health.
“We all know a nation’s health is a nation’s health”, he pointed out.
According to him, although this is the first health fair hosted by the church for the year, it has hosted such activities in the past.
In addition to the health fair, the church conducted visits at several senior citizens’ homes and juvenile centres. Back to school hampers were also distributed to school children.
