In a simple but significant ceremony Friday at the Umana Yana, E.R. Burrowes students from the Graduating Class of 2017 have put on display the items they have worked on during their tutelage at the art school.
On display are ceramics, paintings, textile and graphic designs from 14 full time and part-time Diploma and Certificate students.
The exhibition was declared open by Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mr. Steve Ninvalle, who highlighted the students’ tenacity and perseverance which saw them successfully completing their studies.
DPS Ninvalle commended the E.R.Burrowes School of Art for training students who will no doubt make a tangible contribution to Guyana’s cultural and artistic tapestry but to national development as well.
In his remarks, Mr. George Struikelblok, External Examiner, noted that through the pieces of art he was able to see a lot of Guyana’s culture. With regards to the scope of work, he emphasized the importance of connectivity with the wider art-world. This, he posited, is critical for the development of art and cultural engagements. Connecting and networking with other artists also promotes exposure and makes artists more aware of new techniques being developed.
During his deliberations, Struikelblok urged the students to stay focused so that they can put Guyana on the map. Additionally, it is important for artists to do research.
Burrowes’ Director of Studies, Mrs. Genell Hamilton-Younge, indicated that the school is committed to fulfilling its mandate, which is to foster the development of students through the teaching of skills, exposure to the arts, and the provision of an environment in which students mature into artists.
