Dear Editor,
I crave a space in your well-read letter paper to pen the appeal from one soldier to another, in the person of His Excellency RTD, Brigadier, President David Arthur Granger, Commander in Chief of the Republic state of Guyana.
Your Excellency, it is with deep anguish that I have read in the media, Kaieteur News dated, June 13, 2017, with graphic pictures of 3 of the nine soldiers, survivors of the horrific Camp Groomes explosion on the Linden Highway that took the lives of 3 of their comrades, 16 years ago in the line of duty in the services of this country of ours.
Their scars are visible but the trauma and psychological damage is personal and permanent; with recurring nightmares for the rest of their lives. It is extremely hard for me to understand that after 16 years, their suffering was not addressed by the Guyana Defense Force (G.D.F.) in an honourable and reasonable form of compensation for their sacrifice and ongoing suffering, since their good life is over, and is replaced with basic existence through subsistence.
At a time when huge sums have and are being spent on frivolous galas and COIs even one on an alleged threat on the President’s life, surely it is not impossible for a worthwhile amount be made-available to address this embarrassing and long festering situation for the G.D.F.
Your Excellency, the Guyana Legion and all the other ex-soldiers affiliates seem to have failed our comrades. I am extremely hopeful that in your good office and capacity along with all the former Officers and ex-soldier, now enjoying the good life that comprise staff of the Ministry of the Presidency and other Government Agencies, with your motivation can make the personal contribution to this worthwhile and noble cause. And remove this potential dark stain of neglect when it most matters for the nine members of that tragedy and not see them as collateral damage.
Concerned Ex-Soldier
