An 18-month jail term was imposed on 18-year-old Mark Anthony yesterday after he was convicted for discharging a loaded firearm at Roger Pilgrim, a member of the Guyana Police Force.
Anthony, who was first charged on November 1, 2016, was found guilty of the charge, by Magistrate Dylon Bess, at the conclusion of a trial in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.
On September 26, 2016 at Georgetown, Anthony discharged a loaded firearm at Pilgrim with intent to maim, disfigure or to cause him grievous bodily harm.
The teenage was jailed for an additional one year each on charges of illegal firearm and ammunition possession. On September 26, 2016, Anthony had a .38 revolver in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm license. On the same day he was also found with three .38 ammunition in his possession when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
Magistrate Bess also found Anthony guilty on both charges.
In addition, he was fined $100,000 on the illegal firearm charge and another $50,000 on the illegal ammunition charge. The prison terms will run concurrently.
According to the facts, on the day in question, Pilgrim, who was dressed in plain clothes and his friends were travelling in a motorcar east along the West Ruimveldt Front Road, Georgetown when they were confronted by Anthony.
Anthony discharged several rounds from the gun and Pilgrim opened fire, hitting Anthony who fell to the ground. The cop was able to relieve Anthony of the gun and searched his person during which an Iphone and Blackberry phones which he allegedly robbed Tevin Williams of, were recovered.
Anthony had been released on bail pending trial.
