– cops question husband
Police are trying to ascertain whether a 38-year-old Sophia woman, who died after being found lying on a roadway Wednesday night, was the victim of an accident or homicide.
Janice Edwards, of 121 ‘C’ Field, Sophia, East Coast Demerara, was found in an unconscious state, and with head injuries, at around 19.30 hrs on the University of Guyana Access Road, East Coast Demerara,
Police said that the woman’s reputed husband told the driver of a passing pickup that she was injured after falling from his motorcycle.
The pickup driver took Edwards to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she succumbed.
However, police were unable to locate her spouse, who had not turned up at the hospital. Kaieteur News understands that the reputed husband, who bore some injuries, subsequently turned up several hours later at a police station, in the company of a relative.
According to a police release, the man alleged that he was proceeding north along the western carriageway of the UG Access Road on his motor cycle, CJ 1830, with his wife seated behind, when he was blinded by the lights of an approaching vehicle.
He allegedly swerved further west and crashed into a heap of mud. His wife was flung off the cycle and sustained injuries, he alleged.
Kaieteur News understands that the man’s motorcycle was unlicenced.
Police said that the reputed husband is assisting with the investigation, as police await a post-mortem examination on the victim.
