Thirty-five-year-old Naresh Baldeo called ‘Black boy,’ a miner of Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, was yesterday remanded to prison almost one week after he allegedly used a spade to beat his 54-year-old fellow workmate,
Mohabeer Gangadeen, to death.
The accused was not required to plead to the indictable charge which alleged that on August 12 at Potaro Backdam, Potaro River, in the Essequibo district, he murdered Mohabeer Gangadeen.
The accused was represented by Attorney-at-law Tiffany Jeffrey who told the court that her client is in need of medical treatment, since he received several lashes to his head and across his chest with a spade due to the altercation between him and the now deceased Gangadeen.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan remanded the father of one until October 17, when he will make his next court appearance in the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
According to reports, Mohabeer Gangadeen of Lot 1 GAC Old Road, Timehri, East Bank Demerara, died after he was involved in a verbal and physical confrontation with the accused, whom he was drinking with at the time.
Reports indicated that Gangadeen was battered with a spade by the accused and thrown overboard at Potaro Backdam, Potaro River, Essequibo, during the physical confrontation.
According to information, the two men who worked at the same mining company were drinking alcohol when Gangadeen accused Baldeo of stealing gold.
The two then got into an argument and Gangadeen reportedly armed himself with a spade and dealt the accused several lashes about his body.
Baldeo then managed to take the spade from Gangadeen and dealt him several lashes about his body and reportedly pushed him overboard
The matter was then reported and Baldeo was arrested and charged for the offence.
