As he entered the court room at the Sister’s Magistrate Court yesterday, 39-year-old Ryan
Singh of 48 West Ruimveldt and #2 Village, East Canje, Berbice, appeared to be in good spirits, with broad smile on his face.
Singh was charged with the murder of Parbattie Lakhpal, which occurred at #2 Village on July 29. The accused appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore.
The Prosecution, led by Inspector Godfrey Playter, told the court that legal advice has already been sought and they are ready to proceed.
Singh was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded to prison. The matter was then postponed to September 26 for report at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court.
Singh, shackled at his feet was escorted to the Police Pick-up as he shouted “I ain’t kill nobody. Ask yuh daughter which man she had,” towards the dead teenager’s mother, who was present during the court proceedings.
He also hurled insults at reporters nearby as he laughed and showed thumbs up.
On Saturday 29th July, Singh allegedly slit the throat of his 17-year-old common law wife, Parbattie Lakhpal aka ‘Rosanna’ leaving her to die. The suspect subsequently fled the scene and eventually escaped to neighbouring Suriname where he was nabbed weeks later and handed over to the local authorities.
Initial reports stated that Lakhpal had eloped with Singh while she was still in school, after moving from house to house they were reportedly financially strained, hence Lakhpal decided to return home to her mother at No.2 Village, but in the company of the accused.
It was reported that the teenager endured much physical and verbal abuse from Singh while the two were living together for a few months at her mother’s residence, in the bottom flat. Singh was evicted from the home two months prior to the killing.
