A 17-month-old baby girl is hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital after she was reportedly raped while in the care of her father. It is unclear whether the father is the perpetrator or whether it was one of his relatives.
Kaieteur News understands that the child’s parents are separated. On Saturday, the man went to his estranged partner’s West Coast Demerara home and collected the child to spend the weekend with him and his spouse.
Yesterday, the victim’s mother confirmed that her daughter had been sexually assaulted, but the nurses at the hospital prevented her from speaking to the media.
The woman’s grandmother explained that the child’s father was paying child support and when he asked for his daughter to spend some time with him, the woman did not object. The man collected the child on Saturday and took her to his Diamond, East Bank Demerara home.
According to the child’s great grandmother, on Monday, the father called and asked for his daughter’s birth certificate and clinic card since he wanted to take her for a medical examination.
The mother reportedly found this suspicious and went to uplift her child at Diamond—it was then that she discovered that her baby was in the hospital.
When the woman got to the hospital, she learnt that her daughter had been sexually molested.
It is unclear if any arrest was made, since the Childcare and Protection Agency was not informed of the incident as of yesterday afternoon.
Divisional Commander Marlon Chapman, when contacted, said that he too was not aware of the matter.
