…as Int’l Youth Day 2017 is observed
With emphasis on a number of programmes that have been helping to empower youths, the People’s National Congress Reform [PNCR] Patriots are today recognizing the youths of the nation. This recognition comes even as International Youth Day 2017 is observed.
International Youth Day is celebrated annually on August 12, and this year it is being done so under the theme “Youth Building Peace”.
According to Chairman of the PNCR Patriots, Clayton Newman, “Today as we observe International Youth Day 2017…I encourage all young people everywhere to celebrate their rights to life, self-worth and political freedom.”
Newman pointed out that youth is a remarkable period of transition from childhood to young adulthood. As such, he noted that “youth is conceptualized as the time when the individual leaves his or her childhood-dependence and start to embrace an adult’s frame of mind through greater awareness of the psychosocial forces in the environment.” He moreover noted that the stage of youth is a more fluid category than a fixed age-group.
“As we make a concerted effort to realize the 2017 theme, let us organize our strength to realize the nation’s national motto: One People, One Nation, One Destiny. I encourage youths throughout the nation to decry those who unevenly distribute nation’s resources; or discriminate between race, gender, culture, and religion, in our society,” Newman added.
To this end, he said that the Chairman and members of the PNCR Patriots commit their unwavering support to the many youth programmes that have been initiated by President David Granger.
The Patriots, according to Newman, have realized that these youth programmes will undoubtedly facilitate the empowering of youths.
The programmes to which he alluded are: the Citizen Security Strengthening Programme (CSSP); the Sustainable Livelihood and Entrepreneurial Development (SLED) project; the Local Areas Economic Profile (LAEP); the Community Infrastructure Improvement Programme (CIIP); the Micro and Small Enterprise Development (MSED) Project; the Youth Entrepreneurial Skills Training (YEST) programme; Hinterland Employment and Youth Service (HEYS) programme; Local Economic Development Strategic Plans (LSPs); Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) platform; Youth Innovation Fund (YIF) and the Small Business Bureau (SBB).
These programmes, Newman observed, are designed to encourage equality, equity, and justice.
Newman considered that it was because President Granger had seen as compulsory the need to build peace among and between youths of different ethnicity and culture that he sought to establish the Ministry of Social Cohesion to facilitate the realisation of the country’s motto of oneness.
The mission of that Ministry is to ‘support actions that strengthen key partnerships across sectors, facilitate bridging gaps within and across communities and contribute to socio economic, cultural, spiritual wellbeing and enriched livelihoods for all.’
The vision of that Ministry, Newman said, is a reflection of the propensity of the government of Guyana which is to “unify Guyana where diversities are embraced, conflicts resolved, network and collaboration with stakeholders strengthened, equity promoted and decision-making processes result in equal opportunities and benefits to all including youths.”
As such, Newman appealed for “youths all over Guyana to celebrate today with your exuberant energies and with focused hope for the future”.
“Let’s take the opportunity to embrace and utilize the many youth projects established by the government to engage young people in every region and hold fast to your objective. Do not allow anyone to distract you in achieving your goals,” encouraged Newman. He continued by adding that “the goal of all youths should be to become true patriots. Commit your strength to the building of peace; let us all find our identity and self-worth as young Guyanese and live to see the reality of the nation’s motto in our life time.”
