Kester Harvey, a former Loan Officer at Citizens Bank, was yesterday jailed for 18 months after he was found guilty of defrauding one of the bank’s customers of $3M. The sentencing was handed down by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Harvey, of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara, was convicted on the charge which stated that between October 1, 2016 and October 31, 2016, being entrusted with $3M by Pat Isaacs, to deposit same into Isaacs’ Citizens Bank Account, he fraudulently converted same to his own use and benefit.
Court facts state that Harvey was the Citizens Bank loan officer designated to Isaacs. During October 2016, Isaacs visited the bank and gave Harvey $3M to deposit into an account he holds at the said bank to repay a loan. Shortly after Harvey resigned from the financial institution and Isaacs discovered that the money was not deposited into his account.
Harvey, who was represented by Attorney-at-Law Leslie Sobers, broke down in tears upon hearing the Chief Magistrate’s verdict. He professed his innocence while begging the court for leniency.
According to him, he would never commit a criminal offence, since it would jeopardize the lives of his three underage children. “I stand before this court as an innocent man. From the inception if I had taken Mr. Isaacs’ money I would have repaid him,” Harvey said.
The Chief Magistrate in imposing the minimal sentence for the offence told Harvey that he was dishonest for taking the money.
