Large-scale gold producer, Guyana Goldfields Inc., which has operations at Aurora, Region Seven, on Wednesday evening suffered a fire.
The blaze at the elution circuit boiler was quickly put out with no injuries sustained by workers.
“No injuries were sustained by employees and emergency response procedures were immediately initiated and the fire was quickly extinguished. Mill operations were suspended for four hours for safety precautions and to determine the cause of the fire. The mill is fully operational with the only impact being the inability to strip loaded carbon.”
According to the Canadian company, the incident resulted in damage to the boiler and adjacent cables.
“All spare parts are located on site and are immediately being utilized. Management expects repairs to cost approximately US$300,000 – $400,000 and take up to 21 days to complete.”
Based upon the current carbon stripping capacity, the company said it will need to store the excess carbon containing approximately 3,500 ounces of recoverable gold, which will not be available for sale until the fourth quarter.
Scott Caldwell, President and CEO, according to the statement, said that thankfully his company’s emergency response procedures were in quick effect and the fire was contained immediately and no injuries were sustained.
Guyana would have been nervous about the situation as the company’s production has been helping to push up declarations.
Already for this year, gold production is on track to surpass the 700,000-ounce target set by the authorities.
According to the Natural Resources Ministry, some 367,861 ounces of gold was declared as at July 31, 2017. The target set for 2016 was 600,000 ounces.
