Mere hours after the final of the GT Beer Keep Your Five Alive Futsal championship
was abandoned due to crowd encroachment on the field at the National Gymnasium, the finalists and organizers met and agreed to an amicable conclusion.
The very intense showdown ended 4-4 at the end of regulation and extra time and was at the stage of kicks from the penalty mark when the crowd, which had already invaded the playing area, kept pressing forward effectively reducing the space for the kicks after every shot.
When the referees decided to call it quits at 02:45hrs, the score was again locked at 2-2 with both Future Stars and West Front Road-Gold is Money missing twice each.
Banks DIH Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart was on hand in the wee hours of Sunday morning to hand over the trophy to both Captains as well as a cash prize of $400,000 each. The original first prize was $500,000 with a second place of $250,000.
Given the fact that neither team were responsible for the abrupt end to the match, the teams and organiser agreed that a further $50,000 would be added for the teams to have an equal share of the spoils.
Meanwhile, plans are already in train for the two teams to face off in a match that will be dubbed, ‘The Final Decider’.
A sponsor and the organizer are working on a purse that would be acceptable to the teams as well as a date for what is anticipated to be another shindig to decide who the best is.
