The Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown appears to be once again attempting to restore the unsightly Le Repentir Cemetery to the beautiful landmark it once was.
They are making one small start by erecting steel gates at the entrances soon.
This is according to Town Clerk, Royston King who disclosed that the gates will be erected within the next two to three weeks.
When questioned about works on the cemetery, King said that the Mayor and City Council have begun consultations with engineers in an effort to undertake the task.
“At this point the team is very proud about the condition of the cemetery and they are also making moves to have the cemetery cleared before installing the gates,” the Town Clerk noted.
The Town Clerk disclosed that once the burial spot is cleared of weed, the City Council will work on implementing a progressive maintenance program which will ensure that the cemetery is kept “cleared, clean and healthy” at all times.
According to the Town Clerk, ensuring the cemetery is in a presentable manner is a major priority for the Council. “We are not very proud about the condition of the cemetery.”
The Le Repentir Cemetery which is located in Georgetown has in the past served a number of families as a suitable spot for burying their family, friends and loved ones.
Over the years, the size of the cemetery has been extended and therefore requires a lot of care and upkeep by the Mayor and City Council on a more regular basis since they are responsible for the maintenance of the Cemetery. While the garbage issues are no longer affecting the residents living near to the Cemetery, there are still shrubs and bushes that are prevalent in various sections of the cemetery.
While some relatives are happy with the progress that the M&CC is making they are concerned about the upkeep of the Cemetery on a regular basis.
