The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is still to determine the origin of a fire on July 19, last, which destroyed the home of Chairperson of the Guyana Forestry Commission, Jocelyn Dow, and several business places she had rented out.
Yesterday, a source from the GFS said that investigators at the agency have found it challenging to determine the cause of the blaze. However, it has been confirmed that the early morning fire started in the lower flat of the property—between two businesses, a shipping entity and a pest control company. The source indicated that investigators are still trying to find out what caused the fire.
When contacted, Dow did not wish to speak much on the incident but noted that she is presently in contact with the insurance company.
Asked whether she has plans to rebuild and move back to the location, the woman said that she would not want to make the Charlotte Street, Bourda property her home again.
The blaze started sometime around 05:20 hrs when Dow was asleep in the upper flat of the three storey structure.
Trans Caribbean International Shipping, Anetha’s African Boutique, Target Services Pest Control, Hardwood Veneers (Guyana) Limited and the Westmaas Acupuncture Clinic were all businesses which were housed in the building.
Recalling what transpired, Dow said that she heard the fire alarm in the kitchen but when she went to investigate, she did not see any smoke. She added that when she went down to the middle floor, she noticed thick smoke coming through the floor boards, after which she immediately woke the other occupants and searched for her pets—by this time, most of the building had engulfed in smoke.
Dow’s furniture store, Liana Cane furniture factory at Victoria Road, Plaisance was destroyed by a fire in January 2016.
