A homeless man was yesterday remanded to prison on a simple larceny charge after he made an appearance before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Forty-nine-year-old Robert Bagenot pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that between August 2 and August 3 at Forshaw Street, Queenstown, Georgetown, he broke and entered Nehemiah Comprehensive School and stole two electrical fans, ten small bottles of water and two stabilizers, all totalling $42,000.
The accused, when given a chance to address the court, said that he was walking on the road and he picked up a fan that was in the garbage heap.
The unrepresented man said that he was charged and convicted before for cursing a police rank.
Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh opposed bail being granted to the defendant citing that he has no fixed place of abode. The Prosecutor went on to tell the court that if the defendant is granted bail he will not return to court for the trial.
According to the prosecutor, the articles mentioned in the charge were found in the defendant’s possession.
The court heard that the items were positively identified by the head teacher as the property of the school. The defendant will make his next court appearance on August 18.
