A father of eight was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and denied a charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Derrick Persaud, 25, of Broomes Estate, Mabaruma, North West District, denied the charge which read that on July 29 at Aruka River in the North West District, he had in his possession 75 grams of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
The man’s lawyer asked that he be released on reasonable bail citing that he has no antecedents.
But Police Prosecutor Arvin Moore asked that bail be denied on the grounds that no special reason was outline by the defendant attorney.
The prosecutor told the court that on the day in question the defendant hired a boat to transport goods.
The prosecutor added that the boat which was carrying foodstuff and a quantity of fuel was intercepted by a party of policemen who conducted a search on the boat and found 46 transparent Ziploc plastic bags containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be narcotics.
The court heard that when a physical search was conducted on the defendant the police found 10 grams of narcotics in his left side pocket. The defendant was told of the offence committed and arrested.
An investigation was carried out and the defendant was charge for the present offence.
The defendant will make his next court appearance on August 22 at the Mabaruma Magistrates’ Courts.
