While most children are enjoying their August holidays, 10-year-old Rahul Jairam, for the past month has been waking up at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) with swollen feet and face. This was after the Grove Primary school student was diagnosed with kidney failure two years ago.
Over the past month his condition has worsened and he is in urgent need of a kidney transplant. This illness deprives him of being able to naturally filter metabolic wastes from his body.
Chandroutie Hussain, called Sharon, Jairam’s mother, is therefore requesting members of the public to help her save her child’s life, by donating a kidney.
She explained that she is unable to donate her kidney to Jairam since she is not of the best health and she also has five other children to tend to.
They are all, except for one, younger than Rahul. She also mentioned that his biological father is deceased.
When this newscast visited the child, his face was still swollen and he had multiple bandages across his stomach and hand.
Jairam’s mother said, “He deh good, good home then he start tek in about a month now with (shortness of breath), can’t walk and he start get weak. When I bring he back they say the kidney really need change, that it gone far.”
She stated that he was going to school although diagnosed with the illness except for the month when he was in the hospital.
Hussain said that the transplant can be done in Guyana if they become “blessed” with a donor, free of cost, but if not they will have to take the child abroad.
She went on to say that the doctor informed her that willing persons can “come forward” and will be given the necessary tests to ensure the kidney matches that of the child’s.
Willing donors can contact Sharon on cellphone number: 695-3250
