With the Emancipation Day activities taking place across the country the Number #63 beach saw hundreds of Berbicians and Guyanese “packing up” at the beach for the day of excitement.
Director of Tourism, Indranauth Haralsingh made it clear that no entry fee should have been charged upon entry at the beach.
This was in response to students from the University of Guyana, Tain Campus, proposing to collect donations at the beach entrances for the maintenance of the beach. However, the Tourism Director explained that though the idea is not a bad one, persons would leave with the wrong idea.
He noted, that persons walking on the beach and collecting donations is a much better idea, than standing at the entrance of the beach.
Meanwhile, according to Gobin Harbhajan, the Prime Minister’s representative for Region Six the Number 52/74 NDC gave the green light to the UGBC students to collect an entrance fee.
Harbhajan had highlighted the importance of a beach management committee stating that the Number 52/74 NDC with the support of the region had taken the responsibility for the beach. Years ago, there was a beach management committee, which was mostly headed by members of the now opposition. The committee did not last.
Haralsingh added that a new ‘Beach Authority’ will be established that will focus on maintenance of the beach and facilities of the beach. The beach Authority, he noted, will likely fall under a ministry, in order to benefit from Government funding through the ministry.
He also noted that once the Beach Authority is in place, it can invite other stakeholders to come on board to better preserve and maintain the tourism attraction.
