The death of eight-year-old Isaiah Smartt, whose body was pulled from a shallow drain on June 20, last at ‘E’ Field Sophia, is proving to be a difficult case to solve.
It has been little over a month and investigators have not found any concrete evidence leading to the arrest of a suspect.
In fact, a spiritualist who was fingered in the little boy’s killing has been instructed to visit the police station every Monday.
What is even more surprising is the fact that two close relatives of the eight-year-old also have to report to the station weekly.
Now, who really killed little Isaiah? What was the motive? And can his murder be solved?
These are the questions residents in Sophia have been asking.
Investigators seemed convinced that they have their eyes on the person(s) involved—and they even have a theory as to why each person might want the lad dead.
Kaieteur News was informed that a file was sent for legal advice and further investigation was recommended into the child’s murder.
Initially, it was thought that the little boy had drowned, but a post mortem performed on the lad’s body revealed that he died from asphyxiation due to broncho aspiration and compounded by compression injuries to the neck.
The little boy was last seen alive in the care of his two relatives.
It was after Smartt allegedly “wandered” off from his relatives’ home that his body was found a day later, by a male relative in the spiritualist’s yard. She was subsequently arrested based on statements given to the cops by the two relatives.
When this newspaper revisited the scene of the murder recently, a young man had indicated that little Isaiah Smartt used to search the roads for food and that he was often left alone at home.
“When he was alive he used to be swimming and catching fish in all them trenches and picking fruits off people tree to eat. Some nights that lil boy don’t sleep,” the young man related.
The little boy’s mother, Joycelyn Pickett seemed convinced that the spiritualist is responsible for her son’s death.
Asked about the possibility of other individuals close to her being the suspects, she responded, “Man, look I just want to get this over with and done.”
With regards to the spiritualist, what investigators found strange was that the woman claimed that she did not see the body, which was next to her back door. This is at the side of her house, where she has to walk to go to the bathroom and to her mother’s home where she sleeps.
There are three houses in the yard—the spiritualist’s family lives in the front house, the middle and back houses are abandoned.
It is in the back house that the woman reportedly carries out her rituals. While the yard is used by some residents as a short cut to get to the other street, some persons are scared to walk there.
